Audience Feedback

As a group we thought that it was really important to get some audience feedback so that we could see where we went wrong in our trailer, and what we could have improved on, we did this in two ways, first we uploaded the trailer to Facebook and ask for some feedback, here is what we got below:

 We didn't feel that we got enough feedback from this method, although what we got was positive we felt that we wanted to go further so we could get some really good answers. We decided to construct a  questionnaire that would give us a lot of feedback on the questions that we really wanted to ask people about our trailer. The questions we asked were:

We showed our trailer to fifteen different friends and family members so we could get some feedback. When it came to people understanding the narrative of our trailer the majority did understand it, however some people said it was quite hard to follow each character. Most of the people said that our trailer did fit with the conventions of a romance trailer, however with the twist at the end it was also a drama film. Everyone we asked thought that our trailer was suitable for our target audience which is woman aged 15-22. The trailer also appealed to most of the people asked with inly a couple saying no, which we were really pleased with and thought was a really good result. When it came to the different shots within our trailer everyone said yes and some of the comments written on the second part were " the ending shots of him with the baseball bat were really strong", "The shot of them running down the stairs looked really good", "I liked the bed bit where they changed positions it looked really professional". With the rating the average was seven however the highest we got was a ten. We were so pleased that we did a questionnaire as we felt we got much more information on what things were good and what wasn't that good, we were pleased that most of the feedback was positive as we worked really hard, however it is still good to gain some constructive criticism. 

Analysing Shots

The first shot i am going to analyse is the opening shot, I feel that we have picked a really strong opening shot that immediately captures the audience's attention although it is quite a long opening shot we felt that we really wanted to show the connection between the two characters and the chemistry between them both, therefore people would instantly know the genre and narrative for our film. We felt this shot really portrayed that element of starting of the romantic story. I think the composition in this shot also works really well and I think we have framed it well with them both in the middle, you can also see our choice of costumes in this shot, as you can see they are both wearing very simple outfits which is the effect that we wanted to create as we felt this fitted in with the conventions of the romance genre, I am very pleased we chose this as our opening shot and I think it is very successful and is a very typical seen between couples.
The next shot is a few clips later and as you can see it is of them kissing each other. As it is a romance genre 
we felt that this was a very important shot to include as it enforces the couple are in a relationship and 
are in love, we need these shots in order for the audience to feel happy they are both together and feel happy for them, if the audience start to feel like this it will create a greater
impact later on in the trailer, I also like the composition of this shot as I feel they are framed just enough in order to create a really strong impact. When we were editing this shot at first it was quite a long shot however
we felt we just wanted a really short clip as we felt 
it would create a stronger impact and we would also
be able to fit more footage into the two minutes. 


The next shot is something that Jade filmed with our two main characters whilst she was in london with them. she wanted to make it look like a home video so she asked jim to hold the camera whilst he filmed it, this shot is quite shaky however thats what we wanted to create as we felt this would look really effective and fit really well with the effect of the film we wanted to create. When I watch the trailer i think this shot looks really effective and really stands out although it isn't the best camera work i think it really compliments the trailer and again enforces that they are still in love.


This shot is one of my favourites from the whole trailer as I believe it adds a very conventional shot into our trailer and creates a really cute scene and the audience will think that they both look so in love with each other. However in this shot you can see the shadow of him in the reflected window, I think this a subtle hint that shows the persona that he is going to take on later in the film, and how he is a shadowed figure that we can't really trust. This really creates a good shot as the two parts of the trailer link together trough this one shot which i think works incredibly well and will entice and tease the audience.

The next shot is after things start to go wrong. I think the strongest shot is where she gets in the car and breaks down, as i think it looks very realistic and creates a really emotional shot where the audience will sympathise with Georgia's character and will make people feel upset. I especially like the way this shot is framed as although we have cut part of her head off I feel this creates a really strong emotional shot as we are closer to her and we can feel the emotion of her breaking down.


This next shot is within the montage of the last section. This is a side shot of "Chase" pushing his victim over making "Chase" the antagonist. from this shot onwards. this is shown through these shots. In this shot we can see "Chase" asserting his authority to his victim, by standing over him pushing him down I believe this creates a really strong shot and we can now see "Chase's" new persona that has taken over and you can tell he is full of rage and anger. You can also see the new location of the dark woods which reflects his new mood, and creates a tense atmosphere within the audience.



I have picked this shot as I feel it has a really strong impact, as you feel like you are the one in the shot and the male character is beating you up, we really wanted the audience to feel the pain and see how mad "Chase" gets. I think the low angle of this shot works really well as we it is a very powerful shot and really enforces his status now.









The next shot we can see "Chase's" foot and it looks like he is standing on the person who he is beating up. we think that this shot looks really effective, as again it is from a low angle creating that powerful status "Chase" now has over this person. The costume is also a typical convention of this scene as he is wearing tracksuit bottoms and a hoodie creating a stereotypical bad character.





I think this shot shot is very powerful as you can see the "Blood" on his hands and it creates a real element of shot with this character. I think swell with him covering his face it makes the mood more eerie and creates a mysterious effect. The composition of this shot also works really well as I like the black background as it really shows he is alone and is thinking about what he has just done, and i think this is a brilliant last shot that will really create an impact on the audience as that is the last shot they see and i think that people will remember it.




Evaluation Part Four- Technologies Used

In order to create a successful promotional package there were many different types of technology that we had to use. Many of them were based with software on the computers, luckily this year our school was able to provide us with Apple Mac computers, which are brilliant for what we were going to create. The cameras we use for capturing out footage were:

This was Molly's own video camera we used it as we felt that it would be more convenient for us to be able to use it whenever we would need it. We also felt that it was of a higher standard than the schools cameras. It had a very good zoom setting that was really useful when we were filming. I think that because it was our own camera we found it so much easier so that we didn't have to worry about our footage getting lost, also the camera didn't need a tape so we didn't have to worry about looking after the tape. We found this very useful.


 We also decide to use a flip HD camera to film some last minute footage. We also used this for the night scene in the woods as we felt it was more compact and would be easier to use in the wooded area. We also found that the camera was less shaky as we had really good control over the way we could hold the camera. After using this camera we felt that we should have used it to film the whole of our footage as it was really high quality which really benefited our filming.







We also used a canon 1000D to capture the images for our film poster and our magazine cover. this really benefitted us as we were able to get images of a really high standard, that would help when we were editing them into our products. We were pleased with the quality of our images as we felt they looked really professional as they were taken with a really high standard camera and we feel this made our products look really effective and more realistic.







To help us with the shakiness of the filming we used a tripod as we felt this would help us create a much higher standard of filming as we would be able to keep the camera stable whilst we were filming our footage. When we went out filming we found that we were missing the foot part that attaches the camera to the tripod, however because we wanted to make sure our camera work was steady we tried to balance the camera on top as best we could as we felt it was essential that we used it, after a while we managed to find a spot where it balanced perfectly giving us our desired effect.









 

As we now had the Apple Mac computers we had new editing software to use which was called Final Cut Pro. At first we all found it very confusing as we were unsure of what tools to use in order to cut footage and where effects and transitions were within the program however, after a few lesson we managed to get to grips with the program and we found it much more accessible than Pinnicle which is the programme we had to use last year to edit our film opening, we all felt there was so much more available to us within this programme and it was much more professional than Pinnicle. When we were used to the program we felt that it was so much easier to use and had so many more things we were able to do in order to create our trailer.







Photoshop was used to create the film poster and film magazine this was the most practical program to create them both, as Molly and I have had previous experience using photoshop, we found it very easy to create the desired effect of the film poster and magazine. We also used it to create the different advertising techniques such as the DVD case the poster on the side of the bus and also on youtube, and also when we added our magazine to the interview website. This program was used a lot to create our promotional package as we felt it was the most suitable program for creating all of these different effects with our images, it also enabled us to create realistic advertising techniques that fitted with the conventions of film advertising.




YouTube was our main source of research and where we found most of our inspiration. Whenever we needed to check a convention or see how professional trailer used a transition we used YouTube to find out. This also helped us pick our song that would be in our trailer after searching YouTube. It really helped us to research conventions of romance trailer and help us create a true comparison between our trailer and a professional one.



To create our titles we used a program called livetype. This enabled us to create our titles, with a choice of many different fonts and effects to allow us to create really professional titles for our trailer, we found livetype very easy to use and it was easier than the type tool in final cut and you simply imported them as clips which was a lot easier as they were in exactly in the right place.



This is an Edi-Role we used this piece of technology to record our voice over, as it is really high quality and picks up everything. We also found it was really easy to upload the voice over, and edit it onto the trailer. This piece of equipment is really handy for recording a crisp and clear voice over.    


















Evaluation


Through all of our products, including our magazine cover, DVD cover, film poster and film teaser trailer, I believe that we have created some very professional work, as each product follows true to the typical standard of its format. For example; our magazine cover, has a professional feel about it, as it looks almost identical to a typical ‘Interview’ magazine cover. What I love about the cover is the fierce look that our main character has, I think this will catch the audiences attention when placed against other film magazines as the bright contest between the colours will really make it stand out. I also believe our film poster is of the same high standard, the picture on the poster looks really professional and compliments our film title perfectly. When you see the magazine cover and film poster next to each you wouldn't think they were advertising the same film, however this is what we wanted to create as we felt our magazine would really promote our film to our target audience. Also we wanted to create a really strong contrast between the two in order to show our versatility in advertising methods. As for the trailer itself I believe that it has so many successful points, and I think we have create a really strong trailer. My favourite shot in the trailer is where he is playfully chasing her down the stairs, I think it worked amazingly well and really captured the chemistry between both of them and enforced the genre of our trailer. Similarly I also think that the end montage of the clips that we have put together look really successful, with the twist on the normal ending to a romance film. This by far is the most professional section of our trailer as it really portrays the role of the male character well and it creates a really tense atmosphere when the audience watch this part of the trailer. The titles also really compliment the mood of the trailer which in turn creates a really strong ending. There where many difficulties when we were creating our trailer, mainly with the editing of the footage, also with capturing the filming and making sure is was to a high standard. To overcome these difficulties we had to work together as a team in order to make our end product successful . The biggest difficulty we had to overcome was choosing the accompaniment that would compliment our trailer, we knew we had to get this right as it is what some people to remember about a trailer and what they might research to find our trailer. After we had chosen the music we felt the rest of the editing flowed really well and we didn't have many problems after that. We just had to focus on the glitches and small things that when you watch it the first time you might not see. We noticed them the most in transitions between clips and this really gave us a chance get our trailer up to a really high standard. Another difficulty we found was the when we filmed on the flip HD camera and put it in our trailer, the next time we opened our project on final cut, we found that it flashed red and said "media offline" which we found quite frustrating as we had to keep replacing our footage. Once we had overcome all of these difficulties I think we have created a really strong, professional trailer that I am really pleased with and I think all of our hard work has defiantly payed off. There are many strengths to our trailer however there is also many weaknesses. The weaknesses that stand out within our trailer are I do think that people may get confused with the narrative of it, as i do feel some people may find the transition to the sad part confusing. I also feel the camera quality is very poor and i think if we was to do it again we should use a higher quality camera so that we could get the best quality filming this would also help with the lighting in the footage as I also think that was quite poor throughout, however I think we made the best of what we had and it resulted in a good trailer. With the poster I also feel that the only thing that may confuse the audience is the title i think that some people won't understand the title meaning two things that both relate to the film which are "intimate" then we put the hands over the t and i to make it look like "in-mate" which is the prison. I think maybe it will have to be explained to the audience before they understand what the title actually means. The magazine I feel doesn't have many weaknesses as we have kept it to a true likeness of the Andy Warhol style which is what we needed to re-create. However I feel that we could have advertised our film more on the cover, so that people knew it was advertising a film. Overall i feel our end product is really strong and we have tried really hard to fit the conventions of the romance genre. 

DVD Case And Ending Screen

When a film is released on DVD the image on the case is very recognisable, so that it catches peoples eye who have seen it in the cinema and what to purchase the DVD releasing a DVD is a very typical of a film company after the film has been out in the cinema. We decided as a group that we would have a go at creating our own DVD case to see what it would look like, we used photoshop to create it, here it is below:  



I think the DVD case look brilliant i think that it looks really professional and very conventional. We added the tagline underneath the title saying "when you find it don't let it go". which we thought looked very professional, we also added star ratings as this is also atypical convention of a DVD case. We wanted to use the same picture and text as our poster so that the audience will recognise it as soon as they see it on the shelf we are very pleased with the outcome of this case and think it works really well.

When we watched a few trailers in our research we also noticed that at the very end of the trailer they advertise the website link, so you can find out more information of the film like this on from "The Vow" trailer.



They also have use of the social networking site Facebook, we felt this is another way in which we could advertise our film as people are always on this website we also think it would advertise our film to a wider audience, therefore people will know more about the film and will want to come and watch it. So we decided to create our own version in Photoshop.


I think this looks brilliant, I think its really effective and will catch peoples eye with the blue Facebook  logo against the black background. I think this is another really effective and modern way to advertise our film to a wider audience and it will create a really strong impact at the end of our trailer.

Editing

First week of editing:

When it came to editing our trailer we had to start by uploading all of our footage to final cut pro, we spent a while looking at all the footage before we started piecing it together, when it came to picking our first shot it took us a while until we knew what shot we wanted first. Once we had picked to first shot we started to create our trailer pretty rapidly we found that it was easier to pick the shots as they flowed into each other. When it came to editing the bed scene we found it very complicated to make it look really effective we had to keep watching it over and over again in order for it to look really professional and we had to keep sorting the glitches out. After we had edited this part we had to wait until we had more footage so that we could edit the rest of the trailer after showing it to a few people we realised watching it back the shots were way to long and weren’t working it looked to much like a film opening.


Second week of editing: 


We decided that this week wanted to focus on getting a really effective opening sequence to our trailer so that people would keep watching it. We also added in the song that was used in the animatic, with the song it looked really effective, the song really enforced the genre and narrative of our film which we were really pleased about. we also tried to shorten the shots in the opening to make it look more effective, and we look more thoroughly the footage that we had to try and create a wider variety of shots. We were really pleased with our progress this week as we felt that we have really worked hard on trying to fit the conventions of a romance trailer, we kept referring back to our research to see if we were keeping with conventions and we had to correct transitions and effect that a trailer has. 


Third week of editing:


This week we wanted to focus on the bed scene, and creating the transition between the shots of the bed this too ages to create, as we had to speed up clips then repeat clips we had to really concentrate on the clips flowing together, and not having gaps between them that creates a black flash. Here is the timeline for that section to show how many clips we had to piece together:




As you can see there are 17 different individual clips pieced together which creates a really strong impact on the audience, although the lighting in these shots wasn't very effective we wanted to create that effect as they were in bed it was early morning. Once we had finished editing this section we were really pleased how well it flowed in with the rest of the trailer. 


Fourth week of editing: 


This week we decided to work on our titles within the trailer, we deiced to get a background of a gold blurred lighting effect called bokeh, as we noticed this was in most trailers as a backdrop for titles. we then added text over the top we decided to go with a charcoal colour as we felt that it stood out against the gold background , our font was a bold text so that it was obvious as soon as people looked at it. When we added them to our trailer we thought that it looked really effective and professional. Here is an image of our three titles. We also added our film title to the end of our film, we used the text we had on our poster as we thought that people will recognise it. We then added our billing block to the end as this is a typical conventions as a romance trailer, here is an image of all our titles: 
      




I am really pleased with the outcome of the titles, i think they look really professional and work really well with our trailer. They all look really effective with the music as well which really compliments the trailer, we also feel that it fits with the genre of our film. 


Fifth week of editing


This wee our group had a lot of spare time so we decided to spend it working hard on finishing our trailer, we also had more footage of the part when our male character beats someone up. So we began by cutting some of the shots down at the beginning so that we had a wider variety of shots at the beginning. We then added the footage to the end of the film, we were able to create a really frantic montage of the male character in his rage. it was the perfect way to end the trailer as it was a massive twist to the conventional romance trailer, which is exactly what we wanted to create. We also added in our voice over, it looked really effective as it created a really strong atmosphere change and you could defiantly tell the mood of the trailer had changed. This is exactly what we wanted to create so that our audience would fell emotional when watching this part. Once we had finished this section we watched it back and we felt disappointed, with the music as it wasn't powerful enough so we decided to look for another song that we could use within our trailer that would create a greater impact on the audience. We then found the song "give me love" by Ed Sheeran. We added it to our trailer and it looked so good the song worked so well with both sections of our trailer. However if we used this song it would be copyright so we changed the pitch of the song on final cut, we also emailed Ed Sheerans record company explaining that we were going to use his song in our trailer the email and the changing of the pitch is below. 





Voice Over

In film trailers it is very conventional to have a voice over, over the top of the trailer. We decided that we wanted to create a voice over that would have the same effect first we started by looking at existing voice overs that have been used in trailers, so that it would give us an idea of what we wanted our character to say.

This quote is from the Romance film 'Like Crazy' 
“I thought I understood it, that I could grasp it, but I didn’t, not really. Only the smudgeness of it; the pink-slippered, all-containered, semi-precious eagerness of it. I didn’t realize it would sometimes be more than whole, that the wholeness was a rather luxurious idea. Because it’s the halves that halve you in half. I didn’t know, don’t know, about the in-between bits; the gory bits of you, and the gory bits of me.”



This quote is from the Romance film 'Remember me'
"someone comes into your life and half of you says danger stay in your cage you're no where near ready and the other half says make her yours forever".


This quote is from the Romance Film 'The Vow'
"Life's all about moments, of impact and how they changes our lives forever. But what if one day you could no longer remember any of them?". 

We took some inspiration from all of these in order to write our own voiceover that would explain how our character was feeling, this would then also give the audience a greater insight into our narrative and create more emotion and atmosphere when people are watching it. 


"This love is unconditional affection with no limits or conditions. Like screaming out loud with no one else to listen, no one will ever understand just how much it hurts. I thought I knew what  IT was.  But I wasn’t prepared not really. Sometimes I even wish I could have all the bad stuff back just so I could have the good again".

"Everything seems brighter, happier and more intense when your in love. When you find it don’t let go". 

I think that this voice over will work exceptionally well as it flows really nicely together and will create a really emotional part of the trailer i think this is also going to enforce the genre of our trailer and will create a really strong part in our trailer, that will hopefully really connect with the audience.
