Editing

First week of editing:

When it came to editing our trailer we had to start by uploading all of our footage to final cut pro, we spent a while looking at all the footage before we started piecing it together, when it came to picking our first shot it took us a while until we knew what shot we wanted first. Once we had picked to first shot we started to create our trailer pretty rapidly we found that it was easier to pick the shots as they flowed into each other. When it came to editing the bed scene we found it very complicated to make it look really effective we had to keep watching it over and over again in order for it to look really professional and we had to keep sorting the glitches out. After we had edited this part we had to wait until we had more footage so that we could edit the rest of the trailer after showing it to a few people we realised watching it back the shots were way to long and weren’t working it looked to much like a film opening.

Second week of editing:

We decided that this week wanted to focus on getting a really effective opening sequence to our trailer so that people would keep watching it. We also added in the song that was used in the animatic, with the song it looked really effective, the song really enforced the genre and narrative of our film which we were really pleased about. we also tried to shorten the shots in the opening to make it look more effective, and we look more thoroughly the footage that we had to try and create a wider variety of shots. We were really pleased with our progress this week as we felt that we have really worked hard on trying to fit the conventions of a romance trailer, we kept referring back to our research to see if we were keeping with conventions and we had to correct transitions and effect that a trailer has.

Third week of editing:

This week we wanted to focus on the bed scene, and creating the transition between the shots of the bed this too ages to create, as we had to speed up clips then repeat clips we had to really concentrate on the clips flowing together, and not having gaps between them that creates a black flash. Here is the timeline for that section to show how many clips we had to piece together:

As you can see there are 17 different individual clips pieced together which creates a really strong impact on the audience, although the lighting in these shots wasn't very effective we wanted to create that effect as they were in bed it was early morning. Once we had finished editing this section we were really pleased how well it flowed in with the rest of the trailer.

Fourth week of editing:

This week we decided to work on our titles within the trailer, we deiced to get a background of a gold blurred lighting effect called bokeh, as we noticed this was in most trailers as a backdrop for titles. we then added text over the top we decided to go with a charcoal colour as we felt that it stood out against the gold background , our font was a bold text so that it was obvious as soon as people looked at it. When we added them to our trailer we thought that it looked really effective and professional. Here is an image of our three titles. We also added our film title to the end of our film, we used the text we had on our poster as we thought that people will recognise it. We then added our billing block to the end as this is a typical conventions as a romance trailer, here is an image of all our titles:

I am really pleased with the outcome of the titles, i think they look really professional and work really well with our trailer. They all look really effective with the music as well which really compliments the trailer, we also feel that it fits with the genre of our film.

Fifth week of editing

This wee our group had a lot of spare time so we decided to spend it working hard on finishing our trailer, we also had more footage of the part when our male character beats someone up. So we began by cutting some of the shots down at the beginning so that we had a wider variety of shots at the beginning. We then added the footage to the end of the film, we were able to create a really frantic montage of the male character in his rage. it was the perfect way to end the trailer as it was a massive twist to the conventional romance trailer, which is exactly what we wanted to create. We also added in our voice over, it looked really effective as it created a really strong atmosphere change and you could defiantly tell the mood of the trailer had changed. This is exactly what we wanted to create so that our audience would fell emotional when watching this part. Once we had finished this section we watched it back and we felt disappointed, with the music as it wasn't powerful enough so we decided to look for another song that we could use within our trailer that would create a greater impact on the audience. We then found the song "give me love" by Ed Sheeran. We added it to our trailer and it looked so good the song worked so well with both sections of our trailer. However if we used this song it would be copyright so we changed the pitch of the song on final cut, we also emailed Ed Sheerans record company explaining that we were going to use his song in our trailer the email and the changing of the pitch is below.
